It is almost impossible to see the highlights of the Park from the ground. It would take much time to try again. The ideal solution is to the South shore of helicopter tour. You should take one of these Grand Canyon helicopters if you can. They are lots of fun and give you a unique perspective on the immensity of the canyon. Do not cheat yourself while you are in one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Being that it is located in Northern Arizona, most visitors to the South Rim come Phoenix, Flagstaff, Sedona, Scottsdale and other cities in Arizona. It is also a favorite for people coming from Vegas, arriving there by air (a 45 minute flight) or by bus (a 5 hour - ride). It is easy to guess which mode of transport is the most popular. Fast and convenient WINS most of the time.
You can choose from several great flights to Grand Canyon South Rim. There is a tower of 50 minutes and a shorter version for 30 minutes. If you go to the shorter you fly to the North Rim and back and pass on the Dragon Corridor, which is the widest part of the Grand Canyon. The 50 minute flight also, but it is more complete and adds the Painted Desert, desert sentry Tower, Imperial Point (highest point of the Park), the Colorado Confluence and Zuni Corridor.
The longest tour is preferable if you can rotate. The Park is enormous (over 1 million hectares of desert!) and many travellers will only make once. Don't miss on because a large part of the park that you can unless you just have no time for the longest flight.
South Rim helicopters fly out of the Grand Canyon National Airport, just outside the main gates of the Park. You can take one of these tours every day, including holidays. It is a good idea to book your seats at least one week in advance. Reservation at the beginning allows you to get the lowest price and the largest choice in the dates and times of visit.
If you wait until you go to purchase your tickets, you'll pay much more, plus your group may have to separate and you have less chance to get the best flights early in the morning or a flight on the best choppers, EcoStar 130s.
Let me explain why I think the 130 EcoStar is the best of all model helicopters South Rim. These helicopters are roomier and more comfortable than other helicopters of the tower. Their bench seat and the panoramic windshield give all passengers a magnificent view shows below. Their body design allows a quiet flight and smooth and the cabin is the ultimate in the remote control.
A couple of rounds of landing are now available at the South Rim. An option of the tower is to take the aerial tour of RIM to rim and then jump in a Jeep for a ride on the edge of the canyon to see a spectacular sunset. The other overrides a walk in the Park on a Harley for the Jeep ride. These fun tours are limited and they cost more, but they are worthwhile because of the great experience you'll have.
You can save a few bucks on your tour by booking on the site of the company of the tower. Tour operators still have less, and I was able to book several great Grand Canyon tours a 1/3 of their retail price just by booking direct from the company website. You get low rate this by completing your online transaction in order to qualify for the rebate only on the Internet.
